En el relat El problema final, publicat en un número de The Strand Magazine de 1893, Conan Doyle va conduir Sherlock Holmes fins a les cascades de Reichenbach i allà el va enfrontar amb el despietat doctor Moriarty en una lluita sense quarter al final de la qual van morir tots dos. L’endemà de la publicació del luctuós incident, els carrers de la City de Londres es van veure poblats per centenars d’homes i dones de dol, i la mare de Conan Doyle el va renyar pel que havia fet; fins i tot la reina Victòria i el seu net George V, futur rei del Regne Unit, van manifestar un gran disgust públicament. Però, sobretot, el diari va perdre 20.000 subscriptors i la direcció va cridar a capítol el pare del difunt Holmes. Uns quants anys després, el 1901, Sherlock va ressuscitar en El gos dels Baskerville. Seguint la línia magistral que va marcar Edgar Allan Poe amb Els crims del carrer de la Morgue, aquí també ens trobem amb uns assassinats que sembla que no tenen explicació possible. Tot apunta que els ha comès un monstre a l’ermàs de Dartmoor, «una gran bèstia negra amb la forma d’un gos de cacera, però molt més gran que cap gos que hagin pogut veure mai ulls mortals». Sembla que l’única solució possible ens ha de venir per la via de la superstició, una antiga maledicció que pesa sobre la família Baskerville. Sherlock Holmes imposarà, però, com sempre, el principi essencial de la novel·la policíaca: tot el que succeeix a la natura té una explicació lògica i l’home pot trobar-la amb la seva intel·ligència.
